Welcome to the website for the Common Reading and Viewing
Experience (CRVE) 2004! By now you have received your
book, poster, and assignment information from the Emerson
CRVE faculty. We have designed this website to help you
deepen your understanding of the “Myths
of War” theme by providing resources for
you to critically evaluate the text and the film. This
site is rich in study guides, historical background,
and contemporary readings from prominent news sources.
Pay particular attention to the study guide on the
Iliad site page, which will provide some guidance
as you read the Iliad (a difficult text, but worth the
work!). Using the CRVE website as a companion to the
book and the film, you should begin to develop the basic
ideas for your essay.
During Orientation, you and your classmates will watch
Errol Morris’ new film, The Fog of War, and attend
a panel discussion led by experts on wars past and present.
To help you prepare for the film, look at the
Fog of War section of the site. Click on the Speakers
page for more information on the panelists, and be
prepared to ask questions at the Q+A!

Lastly, we have put together some readings to provide
you with a modern context for the “Myths of War.” We’ve
targeted unique pieces that we believe unite many elements
of the CRVE book and film. As the majority of these articles
were written by the speakers you will hear during Orientation,
reading them should also fortify your understanding of
the panelists’ perspectives. It is important that
you read through all of these selections.
If you still have questions about CRVE content after
working through the site, post them to the discussion
board, and CRVE board members and your fellow classmates
will help. Check back to this board often, as the questions
and answers there will likely be of great help to you
in writing
your essay. This is a good way to become a part of
the Emerson community even before you arrive.
We are looking forward to meeting you in September and
hearing your feedback on the CRVE. Until then, read the
book, explore the site -- enjoy the experience!
