At a 1960 rally in Havana, the Cuban photographer Alberto Diaz "Korda" took a picture of the revolutionary leader Ernesto Che Guevara that would prove to be one of the most well-known and widely circulated images of the 20th century. Through this year's book and film, we want to trace the paths that led these two figures- the artist and the revolutionary- to this historic moment when their lives intersected. This year's book selection, The Motorcycle Diaries: Notes on a Latin American Journey, by Ernesto Che Guevara. The film you will be viewing in conjunction with this book will be KordaVision, directed by Hector Cruz Sandoval (USA, Cuba, 2005). The Motorcycle Diaries and KordaVision both describe a journey in which the central figure ("Che" and "Korda," respectively) acquire a political consciousness that changes their lives and sets them on a path toward their eventual meeting during the early period of the Cuban Revolution. |
